Little Nature at Walden Festival

Open Spaces are productions that directly engage the audience in the creative process. Local communities new to music work with a curating team to create a musical work that may be presented at a partner’s music festival. Although a quality artistic result is a goal, the priority is to create a meaningful musical experience for audiences. Open Spaces represent a safe zone for testing different techniques that will be re-tested in different cultural contexts.

Little Nature is an innovative project that invites participants to take part in an open workshop developing a micro-radio station. Together with two experienced artists from Soundcamp, participants explore the sounds of the sound-art forest Het Klankenbos in Pelt, as well as the various spaces around the Walden Festival in Brussels. From the natural environments to the dynamic sounds of the festival itself – everything will be covered.

During this activity, participants work with Soundcamp to learn how to make field transmitters, microphones and other sensors. These are placed in buildings, ponds and other less-heard places to capture live sounds. These sounds are then made available for collective listening in the radio station and can also be listened to online outside opening hours. In this way, informal conversations arise about the role of sound in both urban and rural areas, and the similarities and differences between these sounds.

Little Nature provides a playful and critical place for listening to and creating sounds, and for having conversations and discussions about sound ecologies, rhythmic analysis, micro FM and creative, participatory technologies. It is a unique opportunity to broaden our horizons and discover new perspectives in the world of sound.
